Why Adult ADHD Often Goes Unrecognized

Many adults with ADHD spent years believing they were lazy, unmotivated, disorganized, or simply "bad at life." In reality, ADHD affects executive functioning skills such as planning, time management, emotional regulation, task initiation, and organization. Many of my clients are high-achieving professionals who were not diagnosed until adulthood despite years of struggling internally. It can often look like high emotional responses that don't meet the situation, forgetting where you put your phone or keys, planning to do something, and having the desire to do it without initiating and following through with the plan or project. Example: I want to apply for a new job today, but I can't find the motivation to get started. Now I'm procrastinating and putting it off, and by the end of the day, I never did it. Next come the feelings of being lazy, guilt, shame, and frustration. Oftentimes, you may think, "Why can't I just do it!?" However, it is not laziness.
